Snark in Abeyance

Because I was tired of thinking everything was stupid I wanted to leave my life in America. Because I had engaged in smart - or at least glib - dialogue on stupid subjects ad nauseum, I was ready for a change in thought content and process. I needed to shift my perspective and shake up my worldview, so that I could observe firsthand what else was going on, if life anywhere was less superficial, less garish, less imperialistic and annoying. And what I have found so far is that I am interested again. I am a happy witness and sometime participant, as if you were at a friend's house for dinner. I hope to learn about people and culture abroad, worldover, and regard my own country with fresh eyes.

We have been living peaceably, enjoying things as they are, being accepting and quiet and demure. Which mostly hasn't been hard. I like my neighbors and new surroundings, the food, the view, what we do on Sundays. Cheap judgement and easy condescension doesn't make much sense. Or hasn't, moving into the past tense. We have lived here long enough that some aspects of life are revealing themselves to be lacking. The honeymoon, as they say, is over. I understand that there is good and bad wherever you are. I accept that except that some errors, horrors and demonstrations of bad taste will not continue to go unnoticed. One must employ new standards, but to be discerning is always advisable.

I've got my eye on you, Yucatan.

Been following your blog and enjoying your adventure. Please...do tell why you are watching the Yucatan with a wary eye now. I have always wondered if it is ever possible to be completely at home in a foreign land. A 2 week tour of the Yucatan about 20 years ago is my only frame of reference for what you write in your blog. I loved the short time we spent there and had dreams of returning to live in that part of Mexico. My own path led to Alligator Point instead. Please fill us in on the reasons you have decided that "the honeymoon is over" for your own Yucatan experience.

Did someone say Alligator Point? Now, this is weird. Another Alligator Pointer on the blog besides me? What are the odds...

Hey Alligatorpointer,

Perhaps we overdid things in this post...the honeymoon is by no means, over. I think what Jillian was trying to say, was just that we are at the point now where we are no longer afraid of stepping on toes around here...particularly when those toes belong to norteamericanos. We are still absolutely enchanted...but when we're not, we're ready to talk about that.

Also, my mom lives in Alligator Point, which is an unbelievably bizarre coincidence...neither of you left contact details, but you should try and figure out who the other person is. :)

Thanks for reading!
