Libros y Suenos in Telchac Puerto
I know it's been a long time since we've rapped at you, but we've got our reasons. Namely, we have no internet connection at our house, which is a mixed blessing. On the one hand, we can't really work effectively or easily, but we ARE forced to get out more to see the sights. And perhaps best of all, we have been spending a lot of time at Libros y Suenos in Telchac Puerto, where we have been plugging in and logging on almost daily. Since we're spending so much of OUR time there, we thought you should know more about it so you can spend some time there, too.
Libros y Suenos is, first and foremost, a hotel, so let's definitely start there. Located just two blocks from the beach, at the third tope after you enter Telchac, this hotel boasts seven well-appointed guest rooms, each with television, en suite bath, and writing desk. The beds are comfortable and the rooms are impeccably clean. And best of all, with rates varying between $250 and $350 pesos per night, there are simply no more economical solutions for spending a weekend (or a week!) at the beach. The Canadian owners are friendly, and will go wildly out of their way to make your stay a comfortable one.
But where Libros y Suenos really shines is in the extracurriculars. The owners of the hotel are truly building an oasis for the weary traveler, for those times we all (guiltily) experience, when it all just seems to much, too big, too foreign, and too new. The hotel lobby boasts a massive television, with a Canadian satellite feed. Comfortable couches, coffee, tea, snacks, and refreshments are all available for very reasonable prices. An on-site English-language bookstore offers a wide variety of paperback and hardcover books, all available for sale or trade. And what's this I hear about American breakfast service starting soon? This makes Libros y Suenos not just a fantastic place to flop after a day in the sun, but also a lively meeting place for your fellow extranjeros, who are always eager to buy you a cup of coffee and spin you a yarn.
For those who venture west from Progreso, along the beautiful beaches of Telchac, Libros y Suenos is a wonderful respite after a long day in the car (or on the sand). Do drop by and say hello...we'll probably be there, typing away in the lobby.

The road to Telchac is lined with water birds like ibises and pink flamingoes dining on shrimp in the brackish wetlands. The vacation houses that line the Gulf side (left) have whimsical names and strong architectural features like turrets. It is mesmerizing, white hot in the summer afternoon. Malcolm and I first traversed this long and windy road to check out Libros y Suenos, a hotel and used bookstore a few rows back from the beach.

Libros y Suenos looks like an interesting place. Maybe you could give them a few pointers on spiffing up their website, posting pictures of their rooms for example.
