Salida

MeridaI suppose some final thoughts are in order before we make our exit, and dive headfirst into Merida, Mexico. However, I am alternately totally numb, and as excited as a kid on Christmas Eve. As I have said to many people privately, it is hard to know how to feel, since I absolutely can’t predict what tomorrow afternoon looks like. I can’t imagine it in my head. I mean, I know what going to the airport is like. I know what flying is like. I know what landing is like. Everything after that is this big, floating, hazy question mark, that I can’t wrap my head around. I just can’t predict what it will be like. But isn’t that, after all, the very reason we do this? Not acting because something is scary, or unpredictable, is no way to live.

I do have nagging doubts. I feel like ten years from now, I am either going to look back on this as being the best decision we ever made, or it is going to be the exact moment I made the hugest mistake of my life. Who the hell do I think I am? Who decides to enter semi-retirement at 28? On the other hand, however, what 28-year-old (who missed the dotcom bubble) gets to buy a villa on the beach? I keep reminding myself of the worst case. If it’s terrible, if we fail, we’ll just come back. No harm, and I can continue on with my “career.” But if it works…oh, if it works.

My dad points out that we’ve got the toughest part beat. We’ve not only got money in the bank, we’ve got a continuing income stream for the foreseeable future. My friend Chris laughed and encouraged us today, himself having just gotten back from a week’s vacation in Acapulco. Matt says he is going to be watching this little experiment very closely. Angela and Urs are packing their stuff and moving to New Zealand in under a month. Technomads, move out. My friend Nick said:

“I’ve been following your blog. You guys are crazy packing up all your stuff and just moving to Mexico. I admire your ability to do stuff like that. I may need to cultivate my impulsive side a little more, you know?”

You know what, Nick? I’ve always been kinda proud of that too, buddy. However, most of the rest of my life, it’s been just talk, or it’s been me being an infant and going along with my parents’ ride. It’s time to see if I can put my money where my mouth is and make this work. We started DroppedIn almost a year ago to document this whole thing, and people, it’s time to strap in. Starting tomorrow, this blog becomes the travel journal we always intended it to be. Wish us luck. Back atcha soon.

  1. Hell yeah! I’ve been quoted!

  2. RIGHT ON!!! I think we have the right idea!

  3. Technomad. I like that. I’ve been doing that on other people’s money for 3 years now. As you said, I’m highly curious to see how it goes when you pony up and bet on that lifestyle for real.

Go on my little guinea pigs…run for freedom.
