My Sweet Dog, The Town Slut

It isn’t her fault. But it isn’t really ours either. We brought Olivia to be spayed when she was a puppy. And yet she is currently in heat. Again. It is the fault of one woman alone. Carmen is a terrible veterinarian. She should not be allowed to practice pet medicine. She is a danger to animals. She opened up my dog, scrambled her ovaries and sewed her up with ragged stitches. We’ve since found the wonderful doctors at Planned Pethood and they have assured us she is in good health, but there is nothing we can do now and I feel guilty and angry every time male dogs start hanging around trying to score with O. When we first moved to Progreso we knew nothing; we were just trying to survive the port without a lot of community or support. I am amazed and heartened by how much more good information is being disseminated three years later. Knowledge is power. Ignorance causes venereal disease. Just ask Olivia.

Carmen operates veterinary clinic Akita-Inu, which is located on Calle 82 in Progreso, Yucatan. Don’t go there.

  1. I am so, so sorry this happened to Olivia. We’ve been going to Carmen with Roosevelt and several rescue puppies we’ve found on the beach over the past 3 years, and we’ve never had a bad experience with her. I wish the same had been true for you and Detective Olivia, and I’m glad you found a vet that you trust.

  2. Aw geez, similar experience at the same place. I was just looking back at some pics of our 2 first beach pups post spay/scramble…..terrible, baseball sized swelling at the huge wound for 2-3 weeks….had to be drained with a hypodermic needle every few days…awful, we were also told (by the doc) that they both almost bled to death on the table….Anyway, you live and learn. Brought the new pup into PP, the wound was negligible, and she was over it the same evening…..Poor Olivia went through all that and still has her goodies!!! Unbelievable.
