My Sign Is A Love Song
Have you ever looked for a sign? Not knowing what to do turned to stars or tea leaves or the pattern of a flock of birds for some semblance of order in the universe and your place in it? Me neither. Except I am always doing that. Who wants to take responsibility for a decision gone wrong? How to know when to take action and which way to go if you ever do? With myriad possibilities and nothing but time I end up feeling stymied. How about you?
I decided to take matters into my own hands and sat out on deck to stare at the ocean for answers. Searching the horizon, I contemplated three tools: the Tao Te Ching (Stephen Mitchell translation), my red Moleskine notebook and an iPod Nano. I decided to try my luck with apple shuffle technology and a library of music I compiled last year. I coined the term Nanomancy: the use of an iPod for the purpose of divination. You’re welcome, Earth.
I took a deep breath, a life-altering song about to flood my ready ears. All this potential energy. All these dates and places. Choices. Time passes. I’ve not stayed the same. Everything changes. Except this one constant. I don’t know what I believe in anymore, but I do have faith in this. After all these years I still marvel that I found such a love. When all else fails it is with me, a truer guide than Virgil. And the song that reminded me was this.
